Our Work
Tō mātou mahi

The approach of Healthy Families NZ approach focuses on addressing the underlying conditions that impact our health and wellbeing, in order to reduce the risk of preventable chronic disease.

Healthy Families NZ supports and enables communities to think differently about the underlying causes of poor health, and to make changes to cultural, social and physical environments within their community.

Our Focus Areas

We have a key focus on creating health promoting environments that:

  • Increase levels of physical activity within communities

  • Improve access to and the consumption of healthy kai and wai

  • Reduce alcohol-related harm

  • Reduce the negative impacts of smoking

  • Improve mental health and wellbeing

Our whole-of-community approach enables initiatives to be driven by local leadership and changemakers. By taking a whole of community approach helps identify the systems and the social and physical environments at play, rather than looking at individual choices and behaviours.

Encouraging New Zealand families to live healthy, active lives – by making good food choices, being physically active, sustaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking and moderating alcohol consumption – is part of the Government’s approach to reducing the prevalence and consequences of chronic disease.
